Derek L. McCoy is an award winning school administrator with successful experience as a school administrator, trainer, presenter and concept driver. His administrative experience ranges from assistant principal in middle schools and high schools, Director or Curriculum and Innovation and currently, middle school principal. He shares his experiences from different school settings with educators with hopes of transforming learning and teaching.
Derek has presented in several states and conferences on topics ranging from Building Professional Learning Networks, technology integration, promoting school brands and effective leadership practices. He is the co-moderator of several Twitter chats including #ncadmin - a forums for supporting school leaders at all levels in advancing student learning and achievement. He has helped organize several edcamps in North Carolina as well as the global event #edcampleader. In 2014, he was recognized by the National Association of Secondary School Principals [NASSP], with the Digital Principal of the Year award. This was in recognition for his work with social media in his practice and helping his school, leading initiatives to integrate technology in teaching and learning in his school and helping other educators grow in their practices and build their PLNs. Currently, Derek is principal of West Rowan Middle School in North Carolina. His district is a 1:1 with iPads. His major focuses include improving PD and support to teachers, increasing personalization efforts for students, building up the culture and relationships in the school and community and driving forward positive change. Derek has a BS in Political Science and a minor in Black Studies. He has a M.Ed in Middle Grades Ed with a concentration in Math and an Add-On Certification in School Administration. He also has endorsements in Instructional Supervision and EdTech Integration.
