August, “Sandy” Merz has algebra, engineering, and other STEM courses for 28 years at Safford K8, IB World School in the Tucson Unified School District. For 21 years he facilitated Safford's Math Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) Program. He workds with the Center for Teaching Quality (CTQ) for whom he facilitates nation-wide cohorts of teachers in the Teacher Leadership Initiative. Also for the Teacher Leader Initiative, Sandy cowrote the Teacher Leader Competencies.
An active blogger, Sandy writes the Digressive Discourse blog for CTQ, contributes to Arizona Stories from School and occasionally posts to EDwords. Sandy has also contributed articles about teacher practice and teacher leadership in GOOD, Education Week, Kappan, Go Teach, and Ed Horizons. This year he’ll be writing a column for Educators Rising called, “Anatomy of a Great Lesson.” Sandy authored Education Week Teacher’s #1 Article for the Year in 2012 on seating challenges for students. As a member of Arizona’s Teacher Solutions team, Sandy helps facilitate and, for the past three years has made presentations, at the Arizona K12 Center’s Teacher Leadership Institute. In 2013 - 2014 Sandy was a Teacherpreneur for The Center for Teaching Quality and Arizona K12 Center. Last year Sandy was invited to an NPR panel discussion on Great Teaching at SXSWedu and to present about the Arizona K12 Center’s Lesson2life program at the High Schools That Work Conference in Atlanta. He was recently profiled in the Huffington Post’s A Teacher Like You series. Sandy is National Board Certified Teacher in Career and Technical Education. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Geology from the University of New Mexico and a Master’s degree in Hydrogeology from the University of Arizona. He has a secondary teaching certificate with endorsements in science, math, and structured English immersion. Sandy has training in Cognitive Coaching, STEM, Technology, and teacher leadership.
